Supporting Rural Farmers, Uganda and Mozambique

In 2024 I collaborated with Tillers International, a non profit dedicated improving food security of small scale rural farmers. The 40 year old Michigan based organization works with rural farmers and artisans to create effective, innovative, and sustainable solutions to help stakeholders overcome the challenges they face.

After discussions with the executive director we determined our goal was to fill the gap in storytelling around the non profits international work, to create content for the new website and social media channels, with the aim of reaching donors and new audiences.

In Uganda, we worked with partner organization, Oxen Clinic Uganda, and visited smallholding farmers around Gulu, Lira and Masindi. I stayed in a community affected by 30 years of terrorism by the Lords Resistance Army to document the women who have taken on the leadership roles of the slain male family members. I documented a coop of hundreds of farmers working on advanced, integrated forest farming to buffer against the increasing threats of climate change. In Mozambique the stories centered around the Tillers Farm, and the surrounding communities which have benefited over the decades. We traveled with farm managers into rural communities to see how the micro loan program is being received and benefiting small rural farms.
